Match Report

On a humid and overcast evening, Mallards and Genetics assembled at Riding Mill for another in the long line of competitive and enjoyable Jon Rob Cup matches.

Mallards won the toss, openers Kent and Kumar straight into business with 10 off the first over. Kumar fell first for 12, looking to push the scoring along. Aayush was unable to get going, falling for three and followed shortly after leaving Mallards at 38/3 after 7. The pitch proved to be soft and it was looking to be another low scoring affair.
Pradeep and Stig looked to stabilise things, putting together a 23 partnership taking things past the half-way point, 61/4 after 11.

Nyenhuis arrived at the crease and found the middle of the bat from the outset; some impressive striking, with a couple of sixes saw him retire a few balls ahead of Pradeep. The score now up to 121 with 5 overs to go. Cox and Latif looked to push towards a strong final score – neither able to find the boundary in the closing overs but making up for it with some hard running; the innings finished on an even 150/4, a good score on a tricky pitch.

Cox took up the new ball in conjunction with Pradeep, both managing to keep the Genetics openers from getting away to a fast start, before Cox made the opening breakthrough in the 5th over, 23/1. Pradeep struck in the next over removing the dangerous Taylor, D, thanks to a sharp catch in the covers by Kent. After that Genetics started to pick up the pace a little, and it was only thanks to either a brilliant piece of fielding, or freakish blind luck – depending on your point of view – that saw Buckley run out at the non-strikers end. Aruna had drilled a ball back at bowler Watson, who instinctively stuck a foot out and deflected the ball onto the stumps.

The score kept climbing, in line with the run-rate until some sharp work from Kumar to stump Aruna just short of retirement, and Krishnan retiring in quick time. This changed the game somewhat and the incoming batsmen were unable to keep up with the now climbing rate. This was chiefly down to skipper Latif, who indulged himself with four middle order wickets to really put the foot on the throat.

Even the return to the crease of Krishnan wasn’t enough, late in the innings with the required run rate above 12 for the last three overs. In the end Genetics ended on 121/9 from their 20 to ensure a fine Mallards victory and to reclaim the cup.

Beers and pakoras, courtesy of the skipper livened up the post match with the usual speeches and presentations closing out a very agreeable evening.
